New coverage highlights India’s potential to become a global leader in durable carbon removal.

CRIA–CEEW Issue Brief Featured in Biochar Today

CRIA’s joint issue brief with the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) on scaling durable carbon dioxide removal (CDR) in India has been featured in recent coverage by Biochar Today.

The article highlights a key finding from the brief: India has the potential to supply 10–30% of global durable carbon removal capacity by 2050, supported by its abundant biomass resources, favourable geology, and large agricultural systems.

The coverage also underscores the growing importance of durable CDR pathways such as biochar and enhanced rock weathering in meeting long-term climate goals, particularly as current global deployment remains limited and heavily skewed toward non-durable approaches.

At the same time, the article reflects key challenges identified by CRIA and CEEW, including high costs, limited domestic policy support, and the need for stronger market signals to enable large-scale deployment. Carbon markets are highlighted as a critical mechanism to bridge this gap by aggregating demand and improving revenue certainty for emerging CDR projects.

This coverage reinforces CRIA’s core position that India is well placed to emerge as a leading supplier in the global durable CDR market, provided enabling policy, finance, and market frameworks are put in place.
