CRIA at PRAKRITI 2026: From Innovation to Integrity in Carbon Markets

At PRAKRITI 2026, CRIA moderated the plenary session “From Innovation to Integrity: Evolving Carbon Market Methodologies,” bringing together perspectives from policy, industry, and project developers at a critical moment for carbon markets.

Chaired by CRIA’s CEO Asitava Sen, the session focused on how carbon market frameworks can evolve to support scalable, credible, and future-ready climate solutions, including emerging pathways such as durable carbon dioxide removal (CDR), CCUS, and green fuels.

A key theme that emerged was that carbon markets, particularly for durable CDR, remain at an early stage of development. They currently function more as a testing ground than a fully mature system, underscoring the need for strong methodological foundations and clear policy direction.

The discussion also highlighted the importance of clarifying distinctions between CCUS, nature-based solutions, and engineered CDR approaches. Establishing this clarity will be critical to ensure market integrity, guide investment, and support effective policy design.

CRIA emphasised that India’s opportunity in carbon removal is uniquely integrated, spanning agriculture, industry, waste management, and livelihoods. Realising this potential will require methodologies and market structures that are both scientifically robust and aligned with development outcomes.

Building on its ongoing engagement with policymakers, CRIA reiterated key priorities for strengthening carbon market design in India, including alignment with global standards, industry consultation in methodology development, openness to diverse CDR pathways such as enhanced rock weathering, and enabling participation in both domestic and international markets.

CRIA thanks the Bureau of Energy Efficiency for convening the session and the panelists for a rich and forward-looking discussion.
