New certification methodologies under the EU’s CRCF Regulation signal growing global momentum for durable carbon removal.
EU Sets First Voluntary Standard for Permanent Carbon Removals
The European Commission has adopted the first set of methodologies under the Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming (CRCF) Regulation, establishing certification standards for activities that permanently remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
The framework covers several durable carbon removal pathways, including Direct Air Capture with Carbon Storage (DACCS), Biogenic Emissions Capture with Carbon Storage (BioCCS), and Biochar Carbon Removal (BCR). These methodologies represent the first formal certification standards under the EU’s broader carbon removal framework.
The move positions the European Union as a global leader in removal certification and provides important market signals for the development of high-integrity carbon removal markets worldwide. For emerging ecosystems such as India’s, these developments are likely to influence standards, market expectations, and future international demand for durable CDR solutions.
